Work for SYC - Travaillez pour la CJSWe Are Hiring: National Sustainable Campuses Coordinator JOB OPPORTUNITY National Coordinator Sustainable Campuses Sierra Youth Coalition Job Classification: One- to two-year full-time contract with benefits Position Title: National Coordinator, Sustainable Campuses Start date: June or July 2008 (flexible) Application Deadline: May 16, 2008 Location: SYC National Office, Ottawa, Ontario Position: The National Sustainable Campuses Coordinator is responsible for the successful implementation of the Sustainable Campuses Project including coordination of the Sustainable Campuses staff team, resource development, external networking, fundraising, budgeting, and overseeing the planning and implementation of the Annual National Sustainable Campuses Conference. Project Overview: Sustainable Campuses is currently one of SYC’s main focus areas and most successful national initiatives. The project seeks to inspire, inform, train, and support Canadian students in the pursuit of social and environmental change on and beyond their campuses. Sustainable Campuses aims to promote a systematic approach to change in campus academic and operational practices. It supports students’ efforts to work within their educational institutions to create permanent, institutionalized mechanisms to ensure sustainability. In 2003, the Sierra Youth Coalition launched this innovative project to assist students, faculty and administration in increasing the sustainability of Canadian post-secondary institutions through improved understanding of their ecological, economical and social impacts. That is the goal of Sustainable Campuses. This project uses the Campus Sustainability Assessment Framework (CSAF) to assist universities in accurately understanding their socio-economic and environmental impacts. When implemented in combination with collaboration among different campus stakeholders, a sustainability assessment can allow members of the university campus community to develop solutions that address overarching structural problems that will not only benefit the university, but society at large. Sustainable Campuses offers support, resources and assistance for students working to measure sustainability and plan for change. This project is seeking to facilitate institutional and lifestyle changes at universities and in communities across Canada. Responsibilities - Support, assist and train the Sustainable Campuses Regional Coordinators; - Grant writing, budget management and maintaining funder relationships; - Coordinating strategic planning and visioning for the project; - Coordinate the annual National Sustainable Campuses Conference and support coordination for the regional conferences; - Resource development, including hiring contractors to develop needed resources; - Coordination of the volunteer Project Committee for Sustainable Campuses; - Coordinate the Sustainable Campuses 10-year evaluation project with the Evaluation Director; - Network with organizations and groups with similar missions and/or goals as Sustainable Campuses - Represent the project and SYC at conferences and event throughout Canada and the US; - Coordinate SYC's involvement in the US-Canada Energy Action Coalition (attend meetings and summits); - Communications with media, other groups, and within SYC. Preferred Qualifications: - BA or BSc in any field or equivalent experience - Excellent understanding of sustainability - Excellent understanding of Sustainable Campuses - Experience working on campus sustainability initiatives - Technical experience conducting sustainability and greenhouse gas assessments/audits - Bilingual (French/English) - Grant writing experience - Strong facilitation skills and understanding of consensus decision-making - Ability to work in a non-hierarchical environment - Strong analysis of anti-oppression and ability to apply analysis - Strong writing and research skills - Ability work in flexible work environment - Strong ability to multi-task - Experience in public speaking - Experience managing budgets and working with finances - Understanding of the youth environmental and social justice movement in Canada - Strong organizational and project coordination skills - Experience with management of staff, interns, and volunteers - Experience as a volunteer or in volunteer-driven organisations - Past involvement with the Sierra Youth Coalition Note: these are preferred qualifications.
